ORIGIN STORY

Sol de la Mañana: A New Dawn for Bolivian Coffee

Since the 1990s, Caranavi has been the heart of Bolivian coffee. But in the 2010s, the region was hit hard by pests and disease. Production collapsed, quality dropped, and buyers stopped coming. One by one, farmers walked away from coffee, replanting their land with other crops.

The Rodríguez family of Agricafe, long-time pioneers of Bolivian specialty coffee, saw this for what it was: a moment that could end Bolivia's coffee industry altogether. Their response was Sol de la Mañana — a partnership program built around Caranavi's farmers, rebuilding everything from cultivation and harvest to processing, one step at a time. More than 100 farming families now take part.

Sol de la Mañana means "morning sun" in Spanish. Like light returning after a long night, the name carries the promise of a new beginning for Bolivian coffee — and MOMOS COFFEE is proud to bring it to your cup.

Meet the Producers: Carmelita & Luis

Carmelita and Luis are the couple behind this coffee — long-time partner farmers with the Rodríguez family through the Sol de la Mañana program. Their lot is Caturra, the variety widely regarded as the identity of Bolivian coffee, processed using a method the Rodríguez family developed themselves: Coco Natural.

About Coco Natural

Coco Natural blends traditional natural processing with mechanical drying. Drawing on decades of mass-drying expertise from their earlier peanut-processing business, the Rodríguez family adapted that technology for coffee — preventing over-fermentation and holding quality steady even when the weather refuses to cooperate. The result is a cup that brings out everything Caturra is loved for: a deep, layered sweetness that defines the variety.
